A beginner's guide to San Francisco escape rooms

Updated October 5, 2026 · Palace Games, San Francisco

An escape room is a live-action adventure where you and your team are immersed in a themed environment. The goal is to work together, uncover clues, and solve a series of puzzles to complete a mission before time runs out. They challenge your group’s communication, critical thinking and collaboration in a thrilling, hands-on way, which is why they are as popular for team building as for birthdays and nights out. San Francisco hosts a vibrant landscape of these adventures, but none are as woven into the city’s history as the award-winning experiences at Palace Games, inside the Palace of Fine Arts.

How booking works (and why “private” matters)

Many venues sell escape rooms per person, which can mean that if your group doesn’t fill every spot, you’ll be paired with strangers. Palace Games takes a different approach: a private, flat-rate booking. Every room is $425 for your group alone — four to eight players — so your team can talk openly, strategize freely, and get absorbed in the story without playing alongside an unfamiliar group. That is especially valuable for first-timers. Full details are in our booking policies.

Which room should you pick first?

Many guides suggest beginners start with rooms labelled “easy”. Our games are all designed to be challenging and solvable, with a game master who tailors hints to your team, so any room works as a first room. Two good starting points:

  • The Great Houdini Escape Room — 80 minutes, the most approachable of the four and a great introduction to how our rooms think.
  • The Edison Escape Room — 100 minutes, Thomas Edison’s secret laboratory. One of the most technologically advanced games anywhere, but its story and production value make it an unforgettable first experience.

Save The Attraction (120 minutes, our most ambitious room) for when your group has a game or two under its belt — or dive in if you’re feeling brave. Compare all four rooms.

What happens when you arrive

Your adventure begins the moment you arrive. A game master greets your team, explains the rules, outlines your objective, and serves as your guide throughout — your lifeline when you’re truly stuck. (Read our arrival information so you know where the green doors are.)

Once the clock starts, you step into a new world. Explore your surroundings, search for clues, and share what you find. The room is full of interconnected puzzles that need teamwork to solve, and the race against time adds excitement and urgency. But the goal is collaborative fun: the best moments are the shared “aha!” insights, cracking a difficult code, and finishing the mission together. Don’t get caught up in “winning” — focus on the journey. Our FAQ answers the common first-timer questions (yes, the door is unlocked; no, you don’t need to know any history).

Five tips from experienced players

  1. Communicate constantly. Voice every thought and share every discovery. An object that seems insignificant to you might be exactly what a teammate needs.
  2. Search systematically. Look high, low, under and inside everything. Have the team finish one area before moving to the next so nothing is missed.
  3. Stay organized. Keep found clues in one place and put used keys and codes in a separate “done” pile so you don’t waste time re-solving them.
  4. Split up on purpose. Our rooms run several puzzle tracks at once, so small sub-teams working in parallel get further than everyone crowding one puzzle.
  5. Ask for hints. Hints are part of the design, not a failure. Your game master gives them so you experience the whole adventure instead of stalling on one step.

What makes Palace Games different

Our rooms are built directly into the historic fabric of the Palace of Fine Arts, and their stories are intertwined with the building’s real history from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition — a level of immersion that can’t be replicated elsewhere. The rooms are consistently ranked among the best in the world for their high-tech puzzles and cinematic production value; many first-time players tell us they feel “spoiled” afterwards.
